Thing 5

  • An advantage of IM is that it is convenient. You can use IM while you’re online working on other “things”. You won’t get a neck ache holding a phone. It is quieter. A disadvantage is that it is less personal.

  • IM can save long distance charges, both personally and professionally, if there isn’t a toll free number available. You can work on two or more things at once.

  • I have used IM to ask NLC a reference question when another staff member was using the phone. I would use it again. However, it can be easier to explain and ask further questions about a subject by phone.

You are right - some things are easier to ask in person or by phone. There are times I will IM my colleagues down the hall, times I send an email, and times I get up and walk down to their offices. It's nice to have all three options!
